Sometimes your earwax may be too hard to remove in one appointment. If this is the case, your clinician will ask you to use earwax softening drops and return for a complementary second appointment in 1-2 weeks. If any referral to your GP or audiologist is required, your clinician will facilitate this for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I’m suffering from earwax build-up?

If you notice any of the following symptoms, you may be suffering from earwax build-up:

  • Vertigo (feeling sick and dizzy)
  • Tinnitus (ringing in your ears)
  • Hearing loss
  • Earache
  • Feeling as though your ears are blocked
What can cause earwax build-up?

Earwax is normal and helps to protect your ears from germs and dirt. However, some people are more prone to build-up of wax which may cause the ear canal to become blocked:

  • Lots of hair in your ear canals
  • Damaged or narrow ear canals
  • Otitis externa (inflammation of your ear canal, often called “swimmer’s ear”)
  • Conditions affecting the scalp or skin around the ear

Do not use cotton buds or similar objects to attempt to remove wax. This will push the wax further into your ear.

What products can help with earwax build-up?

Your local Rowlands Pharmacy can recommend a variety of ear drops to help resolve a build-up of earwax. These can help dissolve the wax or soften it to allow it to fall out by itself. However, one of the most effective ways to remove a build-up of earwax is by a process called microsuction.

What is microsuction?

Our clinicians use a small suction tube to gently suck wax out of the ear. It is a safe and effective method of earwax removal. All of our clinicians have completed microsuction training accredited by the BSA (British Society of Audiology) and BSHAA (British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists) in order to give you the most comfortable experience possible.

Our clinicians use the Tympa System to allow for safe and efficient inspection of your ear and wax removal. Find more information on the Tympa System, as well as ear health and advice articles, here - https://mytympa.com/health-advice/
