Colic
Colic is a broad term referring to uncontrollable extended bouts of crying in a baby who is otherwise well fed and healthy. It can be very frustrating and distressing for parents, but it is not a serious condition and will eventually pass.
When does colic start?
It usually occurs in babies from 2 weeks old and lasts up to 3 or 4 months. Babies with colic look uncomfortable and may lift their legs or become red in the face. Colic can be relieved and sometimes prevented with colic medication.
What causes colic?
The cause of colic remains a bit of a puzzle. It could be due to digestion issues in young babies, or even food allergies like a cows' milk allergy. If you're struggling with a colicky baby, remember you're not alone.
What treatments are available for colic?
Remember, every baby is different and what works for one may not work for another. Our pharmacy team are on hand to offer advice and support. Some tips for helping colicky babies are holding or cuddling them whilst they cry, sitting them upright during feeding, and winding them gently after feeds, rocking them over your shoulder, or giving them a warm bath and some white noise for distraction.
