Thrush

Some people don’t experience any symptoms of thrush at all. However, for others when there is an overgrowth of yeast, it can cause uncomfortable symptoms. In women, these may include white vaginal discharge, itching, soreness during sex or urination. Men may experience redness, irritation around the penis, white discharge and difficulty retracting the foreskin.

Your chances of developing thrush increase if you your skin is irritated or damaged, you're taking antibiotics, have poorly controlled diabetes, weakened immune system, undergoing chemotherapy, or living with HIV, on HRT, pregnant or using irritating products.

Treatment for thrush is simple and effective. There is a range of antifungal creams, vaginal pessaries, oral pills, or a combo of these. Remember to follow instructions and finish the full course. If you've had thrush before, OTC treatments are available. Although thrush will eventually go away on its own if left untreated.

Taking note of when you get thrush and the circumstances at the time may help you to identify what triggers your thrush and therefore you may be able to prevent or control thrush. Take control by following these tips to prevent it from coming back. Use a soap substitute, wear cotton underwear, and dry properly after washing. Avoid irritants like bubble bath and feminine wash products.
