Warts and Verrucas
Warts and verrucas are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), they can be passed on through contaminated surfaces or close skin contact. They appear as small rough lumps on the skin and usually affect the hands and feet.
Warts may be unsightly, but they are typically harmless and can be easily treated. Some people find them itchy, painful, or embarrassing. Verrucas are more likely to be painful and are often described to be like standing on a needle.
How to stop warts and verrucas spreading?
Warts and verrucas can easily spread to other people through contaminated surfaces or close skin contact, especially if your skin is wet and damaged. There are things you can do to stop them spreading including washing your hands when you’ve touched a wart or verruca, changing your socks daily if you have a verruca, and covering them both with plasters when swimming.
How to treat warts and verrucas?
You may be able to get your wart or verruca treated by freezing it meaning it would fall off a few weeks later. There are also a range of creams, plasters, and sprays designed to tackle these skin issues, but patience is key as treatment can take up to 3 months to work and may irritate your skin.
